No Condemnation. No Separation.
Message Recap: "No Condemnation" (Romans 8:1)
Summer Series: Life in the Spirit – Verse-by-Verse through Romans 8
We kicked off our Life in the Spirit summer series by diving into Romans 8:1—a verse packed with truth, hope, and the power of the Gospel.
💬 Why Romans 8?
Romans 8 is a chapter that starts and ends with confidence. It begins with “No condemnation” and ends with “No separation.” If we could only read two chapters of Paul’s writing for the rest of our lives, Romans 8 and Ephesians 2 might just be the ones. Why? Because they’re soaked in Gospel truth and spiritual assurance.
At Purpose Church, we believe in offering a healthy spiritual diet—mixing both expository (verse-by-verse) and topical teaching. This summer, we’re going verse by verse through this powerful chapter to let God’s Word sink deep into our hearts.
🧭 Romans 8:1 – No Condemnation
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
This verse is a declaration, not a suggestion or encouragement. Paul isn’t saying:
“There might not be condemnation…”
“There could be less condemnation…”
“There will be no condemnation someday…”
He boldly states there IS now no condemnation. It’s firm, final, and fixed. If you are in Christ, condemnation is not your reality.
🔑 Why “Therefore”?
Romans 8:1 hinges on what came before it in chapters 1–7, especially Romans 5:18:
“One righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.”
Through Jesus, we are justified—declared righteous—not because of our works, but because of His grace.
🧠 Condemnation vs. Conviction
Condemnation drives you away from God in shame.
Conviction draws you to God in grace.
If you’re in Christ, the voice of condemnation saying "you’re unworthy" is a lie. The Holy Spirit, not sin, is your boss now. So when the enemy tries to remind you of your past, remind him:
“You’re not my boss.”
📖 The Power of “Now”
That word “now” in Romans 8:1? It’s huge.
It means this very moment.
Not in the future. Now.
Why? Because Jesus already paid the price.
The Gospel isn’t just good news for eternity—it’s freedom and assurance for today.
⚠️ What Is Condemnation?
Condemnation = Guilty verdict + punishment.
Like carbon monoxide—unseen but deadly—sin leads to death and eternal separation from God. But in Christ, we’ve been rescued.
If you don’t understand the seriousness of sin, you won’t grasp the beauty of “no condemnation.”
📌 Romans 8:3-4 – Jesus Did What the Law Couldn’t
“What the law was powerless to do… God did by sending His own Son…”
The law can show us the standard but can’t give us the power to live it out. Jesus, in the likeness of sinful flesh, took on our punishment.
He didn’t just detect sin—He defeated it.
Because Jesus was our substitute, we now live not by the flesh, but by the Spirit.
🙌 Are You Living Condemned?
Here’s the truth:
If you’re in Christ, you are not condemned.
But some of us still live as if we are. We accept the theology intellectually, but not practically. It’s time to stop punishing yourself for what God has already forgiven.
🧠 One Last Reminder:
This isn’t about your effort.
Not about your giving.
Not about your serving.
This is about grace.
It’s about what Jesus has done, not what you do.
✝️ A Picture of Grace: John Newton
John Newton, a former slave trader turned pastor, carried guilt from his past. Yet he found peace and forgiveness in Christ. That peace led him to write the words we all know:
“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me…”
Like Newton, we don’t deserve it—but that’s grace.
